What is a Lens Hood? And what are its uses?
The lens hood is an often overlooked accessory that some leave in the camera bag or reversered in storage position on the lens. You are not required to use one, but there are some very good reasons to attach your lens hood.
#1 – Prevents lens flare
The main purpose of the lens hood is to prevent lens flare, which happens when spill light comes in from the edges of the lens and cause a lens flare. Preventing light spill from the edges you can gain richer tones and deeper saturation and less washed out colors.
#2 – Protects your lens
An attached lens hood can provide additional protection to the front of your lens glass by adding a buffer between your lens and objects that could scratch or break the front lens element with enough force. There is also an audible sound, the plastic "clank" sound, that warns you that your walking to closely to a wall, rock face or table. This can easily happen when you are carrying your DSLR on your hip, carrying to many things in your hands or just distracted for a few moments.
In the event your camera slips out of your hands or off your neck it may minimize the impact of a shallow fall. The lens hood extends beyond the front element so there is better rain and dust protection versus not having one attached.
If your lens didn't come with one or you lost your lens hood it is a good idea to buy one sooner than later.
